Usually if a student wants me to recommend them to a reputable agent then I require that the student go the full training program which is over a duration of about 14 - 18 months. During that time they have demonstrated a positive and keen eagerness for the business, along with talent, reliability, professional mindset and dedication for staying on a challenging 14 -16 months with me that ultimately brought them to a higher level of confidence and professional readiness.
What we cover is TV commercials, Scene Study, advanced TV commercials and advanced scene study, combat auditions and 10 week monologues course. Below are some of the areas you will learn.
GETTING AN AGENT THROUGH ME:
I only recommend 3-8 kids a year to the top reputable agents and not to the "agents" who don't care if the kids have training or not, because as long as you pay $800 for photos and another $350 or so for fees every year they are happy.
Unfortunately or fortunately, the top agents are not so wiling to take a student unless they are obviously trained and that the agent can get to see the students work to determine their performance abilities.
Usually the agent will either ask to see the students promotional reel containing scenes and monologues or the student will be asked to perform "live" a monologue or usually two.
For example, the top agents / managers will only see a student if that student will perform two contrasting monologues (one dramatic and one light hearted) and a TV commercial.
And they want to see them being performed for camera and NOT for stage as in performance school auditions where the kids walk around the stage.
For example, one of the teen girls in my Saturday class, before I knew her went to audition for top agent / manager before I met her, and she was only prepared to do a stage audition. The agent refused her because he is looking to get her cast for camera and not for stage, and so she came to me and after much work she won him over with her very compelling "on camera" performance.
Its like you going to a job interview and when the interviewer asks for your resume, you say - "Sorry I don't have a resume." The impression being made is less than impressive, not reassuring and not acceptable.
Clearly the person is not prepared at all.
So for over twenty three years I have been recommending kids to the top agents and all of these kids have been fully prepared and the agents know this.
Then when the agent asks for the student to do their monologue the kids blow them away.
Even my own two boys William and Nicholas had to perform monologues to the agent. Nicky was only 6 years old at the time, but still they wanted to see what he could do.
The same will be for your child.
The students are talented but when the top agents for them to perform a monologue then they better be ready.
The agents dictate by their rules and not mine, and they will sometimes want the students to perform live and if they can't then they will be rejected and I will be in the dog house because I guarantee my agents that my students are fully prepared.
My students looking unprofessional on front of my agents have negative effects on me and my next recommendations for the next student.
Now, you can always go and look for an agent but I cannot recommend a student unless they are fully prepared and the monologues is a must.
All their training leads up to the monologues because they are the hardest, and when you consider the student has to perform "live" on front of an agent, or to be recorded to be accepted then its stands to reason, your monologue better be impressive.
For the most reputable agents/managers It's simple - WOW us! And prove that you mean business by being prepared, talented, and professional in your preparation, and that you are not just wasting our time.
For obvious reasons the agents needs to make sure that the student is talented and up to the tasks because the competition to get a good agent and to get a role is unbelievably intense.
Rejection is the name of the game and the best man for the roles does not always win.
Therefore: My suggestion is that the students be prepared for the monologues which is 10 weeks.
Then parents would edit the footage and upload them to You Tube and send the link to me along with a headshot, resume (which I will work on with you)
Once all that is in place I will contact the first agent and have them look at the You Tube link and then look at the photo and resume. If they like what they see then they will contact me and I will pass that info onto you and then you make contact with the agent and set a time to meet with them.
I hope I have clarified the process for you.
My classes are dual purpose meaning I am a high performance coach which allows me to bring a whole new direction for the student to follow as well as the 'acting" teaching. I believe this "dual purpose" is a major part of my students success and what separates me from most others. For twenty years i have been teaching students how to separate themselves from their competition in acting, life and business, and this is vital for success to be achieved. I can also advise on many success strategies that i know have and are working for my students and that you can use to your advantage. My classes teach 'acting" but what the kids really learn is how to better themselves in life, thought leadership, confidence and life skills. My students are as young as 5 to 47 years old. From kids to professionally minded and dedicated achievers.
I believe in the concept of "success" is no accident, it's by design and i teach my students how to design their success through learning "acting" and the success qualities of high performance.
